Permit to Purchase

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office processes Permit to Purchase applications for its cities and townships, with the exceptions of Cloquet and Moose Lake. Permits to Purchase for those cities are handled by their respective police departments. There is no fee to apply for a Permit to Purchase.

Permit to Purchase Application (PDF) may also be obtained from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office.

Cloquet & Moose Lake

Permit to Purchase applications for residents of the City of Cloquet may be picked up at the Cloquet Police Department.

Permit to Purchase applications for residents of the City of Moose Lake may be picked up at the Carlton County Sheriff's Office,1780 Justice Drive, Suite 1300, Carlton, MN 55718

Permit to Carry

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for all Permits to Carry issued in Carlton County. Each application (PDF) is subjected to records checks through the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Once those checks have been completed, applications are given to the Sheriff for approval. There is a $100 non-refundable fee to apply for a Permit to Carry (PDF). The required documentation that needs to be submitted with the application is listed in the middle of page 4 of the application.

Permit to Carry applications may also be obtained from the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office.

NOTE:  All permit applications, both to purchase and to carry, must be turned in to the Sheriff’s Office in person.
