Carlton County Bike Fleet Summer Loaner Program

Carlton County Public Health and Human Services, in partnership with local school districts, received a Minnesota Department of Transportation Grant to for a bicycle fleet to be used in school-based education during the school year. This work is supported by Northeast SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Partnership) activities in Carlton County. In addition to school-based use, the fleet is also available during the summer months for rental by community organizations/agencies.

Fleet Details

  • 40 youth bicycles (ages 9-13)
  • 2 Strider Bikes for younger ages learning to ride
  • 4 adult bicycles
  • Helmets included for all riders
  • Additional equipment provided: bicycle pump and stand, cones, stop signs, etc.

Availability and Rental Rates

Availability:

  • Mid-June through early August
  • Priority is given to organizations providing bicycle education (examples include bike rodeos, specific riding/safety instruction)
  • General group rides

Weekly Rental:

  • $100.00 per week of use
  • Maximum rental period of two weeks
  • Includes transportation and maintenance by the County
  • Fee may be waived if renting organization can provide the required maintenance

Day/Event Rental:

  • $50 per event

Carlton County uses all profit from rental fees for annual bicycle fleet maintenance to keep the cost free for schools.

Requirements

A rental agreement must be signed, and waivers are required for all users. Carlton County is not liable for injuries linked to bicycle fleet use.
